CharIN is committed to establishing standards for electric 2-3 wheelers (E2W, E3W) in collaboration with industry stakeholders, ensuring safe, international, and interoperable charging experiences for users. This initiative aims to promote sustainability, consistency, and reliability within the electric 2-3 wheeler sector.
Current Landscape
As the 2-3 wheelers industry rapidly transitions to electrification, vehicles such as electric mopeds, electric motorcycles, electric scooters, electric rickshaws, electric trikes, and electric cargo trikes are widely adopted, particularly in regions like Southeast Asia, China, and India. However, the lack of interoperable charging standards has led to significant challenges.
The absence of standards can lead to critical issues, including safety concerns, diminished sustainability impacts, and variations in product quality, all of which negatively affect the customer experience and trust.
Furthermore, manufacturers may incur higher costs without established standards due to the need for multiple designs, which can ultimately drive up consumer prices. This fragmented landscape can also hinder innovation, limit infrastructure development, and negatively impact the overall user experience, ultimately decelerating the adoption of e-mobility.
Acknowledging the obstacles within the electric 2-3 wheelers sector, CharIN is launching the Electric 2-3 Wheelers Task Force to tackle charging interoperability across the electric 2-3 wheelers ecosystem, enhancing the overall quality and charging performance stability of electric 2-3 wheelers. With an interoperable charging standard, it can contribute to industry-wide growth and drive international sales expansion.
Objective of the Task Force Electric 2-3 Wheelers
In 2025, CharIN will launch the Task Force Electric 2-3 Wheelers, collaborating with industry partners, OEMs, electric 2-3 wheelers manufacturers, EVSE providers, testing centres, EV associations, and governmental bodies. Both CharIN members and non-members are invited to participate in the Task Force.
The objectives of the Task Force include:
- Conducting discussions for a safe and interoperable charging solution for electric 2-3 wheelers, defining technical specifications, e.g., charging parameters, safety, communication protocols, and ensuring consensus among industry stakeholders.
- Drafting best practices and implementation guides on charging to facilitate interoperability.
- Establishing a testing process for the designed charging solution to ensure its effectiveness, safety, and international adoption under varying charging conditions.
CharIN aims to initiate dialogue to ensure seamless integration, enhance safety, charging interoperability, and provide consumers with a reliable charging experience, thereby contributing to a sustainable roadmap for electric 2-3 wheelers.
