CharIN is proud to contribute to one of the selected projects as an Associated Partner, supporting the advancement of interoperable Megawatt Charging System (MCS) technology for mining applications. The selected initiative, MCS-Charge: Mobile MCS Fast Charging System with Second-Life Batteries for Mining and Off-Grid Operations, is led by the University of Santiago of Chile (USACH). The project aims to develop and validate a mobile, modular energy storage and fast charging solution based on the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) standard.
By combining second-life battery technology with high-power DC charging, the initiative addresses one of the key challenges facing mining electrification: enabling reliable charging infrastructure for remote and off-grid operations.
The project brings together a multidisciplinary consortium consisting of USACH, KPN Energy, Sisercom, E2 Ingeniería, Fundación E2Tech Chile, and CharIN e.V. With a total investment of more than US$2.2 million, it forms part of ITL's first innovation portfolio, which mobilizes nearly US$50 million to accelerate technological development for mining and the energy transition in Chile.
"Standardized charging systems are essential for mining electrification. Chile produces one-quarter of global copper, being an important market for validating MCS at scale. Field deployment in northern Chile exposes MCS charger to thermal profiles, grid transients, battery aging, connector cycling under heavy duty. That's where standardization becomes binding. MCS-Charge is strategic for CharIN because it generates the operational evidence base that standards require."Matías Díaz, Managing Director Chile
As an Associated Partner, CharIN contributes technical knowledge exchange and alignment with internationally recognized charging standards, particularly CCS and MCS. The collaboration supports validation of interoperable high-power charging technologies and contributes to broader adoption of standardized charging solutions for mining and other heavy-duty applications. Through projects like MCS-Charge, CharIN continues to advance open and interoperable charging ecosystems, supporting the adoption of Megawatt Charging System technology for mining and other heavy-duty applications in Chile, Latin America, and beyond.
