CharIN is strengthening its global standardization footprint by initiating collaboration with ABNT, Brazil’s national standards body. This step marks an important milestone in supporting the development of a harmonized and interoperable electromobility ecosystem in Brazil and across Latin America.
A strategic partnership for Brazil’s e-mobility future
ABNT, founded in 1940, is Brazil’s official standards body and a key pillar in the country’s technical and regulatory framework. As a founding member of ISO and a longstanding member of IEC, ABNT plays a central role in aligning Brazil with global standards on safety, quality, and interoperability. ABNT is hosted by IQA (Instituto da Qualidade Automotiva).
Within ABNT, the CB-005 Automotive Committee serves as a core platform for automotive standardization. Given the cross-sector nature of electromobility, CB-005 can gather and mediate subjects related to electricity and digital transformation in support of automotive applications.
A big thank you to José Luiz Albertin and Stephan Blumrich for the collaboration.
Why CharIN’s collaboration with ABNT matters
A key highlight of this collaboration is the strategic importance of CharIN becoming a sustaining member of ABNT. CharIN’s global work is closely aligned with Brazil’s electromobility priorities, particularly through its focus on standards such as CCS, MCS, and ISO/IEC 15118, which underpin critical developments like interoperability, Plug & Charge, bidirectional charging, cybersecurity, and future-ready vehicle-to-grid communication. In this context, joining ABNT goes beyond a formal affiliation; it establishes a practical mechanism for cooperation to support the structured development of Brazil’s EV ecosystem. It strengthens the link between global technical expertise and Brazil’s national standardization processes, especially in a cross-sector field where coordination across domains is essential. Within this landscape, ABNT’s CB-005 Automotive Committee can play a central role by gathering and mediating subjects related to electricity and digital transformation in support of automotive applications.
Strategically, this collaboration can help position Brazil as a leading reference for harmonized e-mobility standards within Mercosur and, over time, across Latin America, leveraging ABNT’s sustaining-member framework to enable deeper and more effective industry participation.
Advancing interoperability and innovation
CharIN’s global mission strongly aligns with Brazil’s evolving electromobility landscape. Its focus on standards such as CCS (Combined Charging System), MCS (Megawatt Charging System), and ISO/IEC 15118 directly supports critical developments including:
- Interoperability across charging networks
- Plug & Charge functionality
- Bidirectional charging (V2G)
- Cybersecurity and secure communication
- Future-proof EV charging infrastructure
By becoming a sustaining member of ABNT, CharIN aims to actively contribute its international expertise to Brazil’s formal standardization processes, fostering a more harmonized and interoperable ecosystem.
Latin America
- one of the most urbanized regions globally.
Latin America has one of the most dynamic renewable energy markets globally: more than half of its power sector (56% of the total) is based on renewables – with some countries having 100% renewable electricity systems.
A regional impact
This collaboration represents more than an institutional milestone. It establishes a practical cooperation mechanism that bridges global technical leadership with local implementation.
Strengthening this connection is expected to position Brazil as a key reference point for electromobility standardization within Mercosur and, over time, across Latin America.
Leadership on the ground
This initiative is being led by Rodrigo Vicentini, recently appointed as Managing Director at CharIN. With strong regional expertise and close engagement with Brazilian stakeholders, Rodrigo is driving CharIN’s efforts to expand its footprint and impact in Latin America.
