CharIN Congratulates SAE on the Release of North American Charging System Recommended Practice Document

[WASHINGTON, D.C., September 30, 2024] — The Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN), the leading global association advocating for interoperable electric vehicle charging standards, warmly congratulates SAE’s J3400™ Committee and all industry members supporting the effort on the recently published North American Charging System (NACS) Recommended Practice document, also known as SAE J3400™. This milestone represents a significant step toward a unified, efficient, and widely accessible charging network for electric vehicles (EV) across North America.

NACS is the culmination of countless hours by industry professionals in a short period of time, driven by the need for broad interoperability and seamless charging solutions. In just over a year since SAE launched the SAE J3400™ Committee, the industry has made remarkable progress to develop and manufacture equipment among a wide portion of the EV charging supply chain. This standard will allow any vehicle or charging equipment manufacturer to produce and deploy the SAE J3400™ connector, enhancing vendor choice and solutions across North America.

CharIN is working hard to simplify and reduce the timeline for the transition to NACS for all constituencies, including vehicle and charging manufacturers, charge point operators, vehicle owners, government and regulatory bodies, and the broader public. CharIN has many planned activities in the coming year to enable the implementation and deployment of SAE J3400™ throughout the marketplace.

CharIN's North America Interoperability (NACI) Task Force, comprised of 395 individual members representing over 250 industry organizations globally, is proud to have played a role in supporting the SAE J3400™ development process through successful cross-collaboration with the SAE J3400™ Committee and its members. Some of CharIN’s activities to support the standardization process and industry market alignment include:
