IEC x CharIN Marine Meet Up Berlin: Advancing interoperable charging for maritime applications

In December 2025, CharIN hosted the IEC x CharIN Marine Meet Up in Berlin, bringing together over 50 experts to align on the next phase of marine electrification. Hosted by BEHALA, the event focused on moving from pilot projects toward interoperable, scalable charging solutions tailored to the maritime sector.

Discussions focused on the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) as a foundational technology for vessel charging and a critical enabler of global interoperability. CharIN was represented by Claas Bracklo, Chairman, and Semih Tetik, Project Manager, who stressed the value of engaging early in the process. Active participation at this stage enables companies to help define technical requirements, contribute directly to standards development, and take part in CharIN-coordinated pilot projects.

Discussions centered on the MCS as a cornerstone for high-power vessel charging and a prerequisite for global interoperability.

The dialogue highlighted marine-specific challenges, including safety, certification, and port infrastructure readiness, while drawing parallels with adjacent industries such as mining and aviation. Participants examined use cases ranging from recreational vessels to ferries and port equipment, reinforcing the need for cross-sector collaboration to reduce development costs and accelerate innovation.

Looking ahead, CharIN outlined global lighthouse projects planned for 2026 and 2027. These initiatives will provide members with a structured opportunity to shape testing frameworks, connector specifications, and the long-term trajectory of interoperable marine charging.
