CharIN’s Recommendations and Efforts for Zero-Emission Vehicle Assurance and Interoperability

The Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN) has provided input on the Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Assurance Standards in response to the Advanced Clean Cars II Regulations.

CharIN supports the implementation of DIN Spec 70121 and ISO 15118-2 for Model Year 2028, emphasizing the importance of the Plug and Charge feature. They urge the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to avoid redundancy in conformance testing and recognize existing standards like SAE J3400 for MY 2026 and beyond. CharIN also recommends allowing interoperability certification through both self-demonstration and third-party certification

CharIN’s Testivals are key to driving interoperability in EV charging. These events bring together companies to conduct conformance and interoperability tests, addressing technical challenges and improving the charging experience. Testivals allow for testing of ISO 15118 interoperability, bidirectional power transfer, vehicle-to-grid capabilities, and cybersecurity protections. CharIN has hosted multiple Testivals globally, including in North America, Europe, and Asia, with the next event scheduled for November 2024 in San Bernardino, CA.

CharIN also highlights the importance of adapter safety and the inclusion of SAE J3400 as a satisfactory charger inlet option for MY 2026 and subsequent vehicles. They recommend leveraging industry-led efforts, such as Underwriter Laboratories (UL) work to develop adapter safety standards under UL 2252. CharIN has established the North America Charging Interoperability (NACI) Task Force to support EV ecosystem interoperability for SAE J3400 and accelerate EV market adoption.
