CharIN Testival in California Successfully Tests New NACS Standard, Plug & Charge, and More to Ensure Seamless EV Charging Experiences

The CharIN Testival NA 2024 at WattEV was the 2nd Testival of the year in North America. More than 260 attendees came together to explore and experience the latest e-mobility innovations. The e-mobility industry was represented by 33 testing companies, testing the interoperability of electric vehicles (EVs), charging stations (EVSEs) and test systems.

The CharIN Testival NA 2024 was a dynamic, hands-on, two-and-a-half-day event organized by CharIN, the non-profit association dedicated to promoting the interoperability of global charging solutions for all types of electric vehicles (EVs).

At the CharIN Testival, stakeholders from across the e-mobility value chain gathered to test the interoperability of various EVs, charging stations, and communication controllers. It was an electrifying event - it successfully enhanced EV charging standards, paving the way for improved EV charging infrastructure and an elevated customer experience.

The Testival was hosted by the CharIN member WattEV, a company pioneering in transport solutions and charging depots, and took place at its Truck Charging Depot in San Bernardino, California.

This time, representatives from leading automotive companies, equipment suppliers and testing facilities participated, including Ford, Lucid, Mercedes-Benz, Rivian, EVgo, Lincoln Electric, Siemens, and more. The event was sponsored by E-Valucon, Advantech, ChargeX, IoTecha, Emobi, irdeto, and SAE ITC.

"CharIN North America has been hard at work with the standardization of SAE J3400, also known as the North America Charging System (NACS). This Testival hosted the largest number of equipment testers to date using NACS/ SAE J3400 inlets, connectors, and/or adapters, with 14 out of the 32 equipment testers performing SAE J3400 interoperability testing. Testivals continue to play an important role in creating the best and most user-friendly EV charging experience through the development of new and innovative open EV charging standards, such as SAE J3400.”
Erika Myers, Executive Director of CharIN Inc.

During the opening ceremony, André Kaufung, Managing Director of CharIN, and Erika Myers, Executive Director of CharIN Inc., together with Salim Youssefzadeh, CEO & Co-Founder of WattEV, welcomed all testers and participants. Sven Gröning from Keysight Technologies provided safety and testing instructions and Amit Bhonsle from Hubject delivered detailed information on Plug & Charge End-to-End Testing.

The CharIN Testival NA 2024 also included a highly successful Public Day on its second day, bringing together e-mobility professionals, industry leaders, and media representatives. The program featured a comprehensive Testival introduction, an insightful WattEV venue tour, engaging demo sessions, and a dynamic Q&A session.

These CharIN Testival events are essential in getting the industry together to forge a uniform interoperability for all charging standards and for all types of electric vehicles. We’re delighted to share our charging facilities with our industry colleagues to test charger / vehicle interoperability in real-world conditions and help move this process along as quickly as possible.”

Additional Features at the Testival

  • In collaboration with Hubject, CharIN extended the Testival scope with Plug & Charge end-to-end testing, allowing participants to test interoperability under real conditions. Practical tests included EVSE Leaf Certificate Installation via OCPP, V2G/MO Root Certificate installation via OCPP, and contract authentication and authorization.
  • Additionally, enabled by the Testival sponsors Irdeto and Emobi, Multi V2G PKI Testing was introduced, allowing participants to test multiple V2G PKIs at dedicated locations. Smooth onboarding processes were essential for maximizing testing efficiency.
  • Given the need for critical testing of the SAE J3400 standard, CharIN has amended its position on the use of adapters at Testivals and has allowed adapters that comply with UL 2252, EV OEM approved adapters, EVSE OEM approved adapters, and CPO approved adapters.
  • Prescribed testing session by the ChargeX Consortium were scheduled to support the charging industry and offered targeted opportunities for the Plug & Charge evaluation.

The coming together of the e-mobility industry and CharIN community in California underscores the shared commitment to a sustainable, cleaner future with green mobility and energy. This event is a crucial milestone for the development of standardized charging products that are reliable, secure, and accessible.
