Advancing smart charging with CCS Extended and ISO 15118-20 compliance

CharIN has reached a significant milestone in advancing smart, secure EV charging with the successful conclusion of its CCS Extended Validation program. Building on the foundation of the first-generation CCS Basic system, focused on DC-only charging, CCS Extended introduces groundbreaking features under ISO 15118-20, including Transport Layer Security (TLS 1.2) for secure communication, Plug & Charge for seamless authentication, and enhanced AC/DC scheduled charging capabilities. These innovations not only streamline the charging process but also pave the way for Value-Added Services, setting a new standard for interoperability and user convenience.

At the heart of this progress is the CharIN Conformance Test Systems (CCTS) validation program, which recently completed rigorous testing for CCS Extended compliance. With industry leaders like comemso and Keysight providing state-of-the-art CCTS Test Systems, the program ensured comprehensive validation of both CCS Basic and Extended test cases during the CharIN Testival. A key highlight was the integration of Plug & Charge with Hubject PKI, demonstrating the robustness of secure, automated authentication in real-world scenarios.

Beyond CCS Extended, the event also showcased pre-compliance tests based on ISO 15118-20, offering a first look at CCS Advanced validation, including Megawatt Charging Systems (MCS) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) use cases. These tests, conducted alongside extensive interoperability trials between EVs and charging infrastructure, underscore CharIN’s commitment to shaping the future of bidirectional energy flow and smart grid integration. By fostering collaboration among manufacturers, test systems, and energy providers, CharIN is driving the evolution of EV charging toward a more connected, efficient, and sustainable ecosystem.

"As the Strategic Expert Partner for Plug & Charge for CharIN's Testivals, we were again happy to support this great collaboration event affording comprehensive end-to-end guidance, optimizations and advancing interoperability in Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) use cases"[…] "Enabling seamless integration across EVs, charging stations, and related systems is our joint goal and drives reliably for all stakeholders and EV drivers."
Jürgen Werneke, Head of Research and Development from Hubject,

CharIN Conference: Expanding standardization across new frontiers

This year’s conference centered on how global charging standards can extend far beyond automotive applications. Speakers and panelists highlighted the growing demand for reliable megawatt-scale charging, the crucial role of AI-driven energy orchestration, and the strengthening need for cybersecurity, conformance testing, and cross-sector interoperability.

By bringing together researchers, OEMs, charge point operators, fleets, and infrastructure innovators, the event set the stage for a future in which heavy-duty transport, marine vessels, industrial fleets, and even future electric aircraft benefit from unified and intelligent charging systems.

Special thanks go to all participants and moderators for their invaluable contributions throughout the event. We also extend our deep appreciation to Adriano Moyes, CharIN Ambassador, for his outstanding leadership and comprehensive moderation of the conference.

The conference closed with a shared commitment to continue advancing unified standards, supporting real-world deployments, and enabling electrification across every mode of transport: from trucks and buses to ships, aircraft, and industrial fleets.
