CharIN successfully runs Testival in Asia

The CharIN ASIA Conference and Testival ASIA was held from October 24-27, 2022 in Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do (Korea). In total, more than 170 international testers and observers gathered in-person at the facilities of our host, Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) to test interoperability between vehicles of all kinds and a variety of charging stations.

The Testival week was kicked off with a virtual conference on Monday October 24, 2022, which allowed as many members as possible to attend the regionally focused conference. More than 150 persons registered in addition to the audience on site that followed the conference on a big screen at KERI Headquarters and used this opportunity for networking as well.

CharIN coordination office Asia and Korea jointly set up an exciting agenda tackling hot topics like Megawatt Charging (MCS), Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), Plug & Charge, as well as Wireless Charging. Renowned speakers from global institutions and companies, spanning from the US West coast to Korea, shed a light amongst others on MCS in Aeronautics, Security Testing Framework for EV Charging Environments, Plug & Charge PKI infrastructure, encrypted communication for Wireless Charging, and gave insights on Korean efforts to commercialize V2G services country-wide by 2023 led by KEPCO. Conference and Testival participants were impressed by the broad range and depth of topics that were covered by the conference.

The following days focused on ISO 15118 interoperability testing of Combined Charging System (CCS) with 18 Tester companies and further 26 Observer companies from Korea, Japan, Australia, Russia, the Netherlands, and Germany. “Seeing is believing. CharIN Testivals are indeed the best proof that a seamless customer charging experience is based on open and interoperable charging standards,” said André Kaufung, Managing Director of CharIN. “As ISO 15118 charging standards are implemented all over the world, interoperability testing adds a layer of trust and security before the roll-out of e-mobility products.”

Jacques Borremans, Managing Director Asia adds: “As ISO 15118 becomes the de facto standard in many industries, combined with Megawatt Charging System, it provides the perfect baseline to expand e-mobility into marine, aeronautics, mining, railway, and agriculture industry.”

Min-Jung Lee, Managing Director Korea shared some insights regarding the e-mobility situation in Korea: “South Korea set a target of 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 to achieve net-zero by 2050. To this end, the Korean government has expanded the scope and investment for e-mobility. This CharIN Testival ASIA in Korea accelerates the market roll-out of EVs and EVSEs to secure interoperability and facilitate a seamless charging experience”.

According to Nam-Kyun Kim, Acting President of KERI, “interoperability of charging system is the key element for people to have a better charging experience. In order to achieve improved interoperability, Testival is one of the most important methods like conformance testing according to international standards, such as ISO 15118. As the first testing lab recognized by CharIN, KERI will keep contributing to various CharIN activities. “
