The NEVI program, which was created through bipartisan legislation, has resulted in investments that will support the deployment of EV charging infrastructure in every state. The $5 billion program will expand consumer transportation choice, increase national energy security, reduce local emissions, and support domestic investments through the expansion of local energy sources, such as new power plants. It also increases the efficiency of the U.S. power grid by delivering more energy through the same asset. Consumers will also be direct beneficiaries of these charging investments and enjoy stable fuel prices and reduced vehicle maintenance costs.
CharIN commends actions the U.S. government has taken to date to ensure investments in national EV infrastructure is universal and accessible and supports vehicle electrification. These funds are especially critical in areas with limited private sector investment.
This announcement creates great uncertainty for the public and private sector. More than one in ten new vehicles purchased today in the U.S. are electric, and states and selected contractors have invested significant time to deliver urgently needed infrastructure to support America’s highway transportation network. The NEVI program was on track to deliver fast charging in about 70% of the most heavily trafficked corridors in the U.S. by the end of 2025 and we should continue with this progress.
CharIN is the largest global association focused on the electrification of all forms of transportation based on the seamless and interoperable charging experience enabled by the only global, open standard for communication between vehicles and chargers, the Combined Charging System (CCS), the North America Charging System (NACS), and ISO 15118. The standards supported by the NEVI Program, which include CCS, NACS, and ISO 15118 create a platform for interoperability, which is key to unlocking innovation and exponential growth throughout the e-mobility ecosystem, as well as a convenient, accessible charging experience for consumers.
"The NEVI program has provided funding resources to the charging industry in exchange for improved charger reliability and guidance on minimum interoperability and standards. These program requirements have ultimately resulted in a better charging experience for the consumer across the board."Oleg Logvinov, CharIN North America Board Chair
“Charging interoperability has unlocked the pathway to consumer choice (both private and public) and paved the road for decarbonization and improvements to local air quality. These benefits help everyone, regardless of their transportation choices.”Claas Bracklo, CharIN e. V. Executive Board Member
The federal government has dispersed most of the $5 billion in funds to state Departments of Transportation based on existing federal program guidance and in accordance with the laws passed by Congress and signed by the President. We urge the U.S. Administration to review and reinstate support for the next generation of funding and reverse the February 6 order.
