CharIN, Irdeto and UL Solutions announce partnership to roll out Plug and Charge in Europe.

The PKI shall ensure secure authentication and authorization through certificate management and therefore, serves as pre-requisite for the Plug and Charge functionality in accordance with the standard ISO 15118. CharIN will offer the required PKI services as the highest trust certificate authority in collaboration with Irdeto and UL Solutions.

The project known as Plug and Charge Europe was launched last year in March by the commitment of 14 cross-industry companies within the CharIN community. Current members include BMW AG, bp, ElaadNL, EDF, EVBox, IBIL, Ingeteam, Groupe Renault, Shell Global Solutions Deutschland GmbH, Stellantis, TotalEnergies, Tritium and Volkwagen AG. The main objective to implement a PKI accepted throughout the industry shall be achieved by September of this year when the environment is planned to go into operation. Thereby, CharIN will offer two versions of the system to its subscribers, based on the current standard ISO 15118-2 and the updated standard ISO 15118-20.

In addition to the PKI implementation itself, “Plug and Charge Europe” has defined, among other things, an organizational model and Terms & Conditions to ensure a high level of fairness and openness across all stakeholders in the market through transparent steering of CharIN’s PKI activities. Parts of the operative governance of the CharIN PKI will be taken over by the current Plug and Charge Europe project team. The P3 Group and tinqplus GmbH are supporting the project with their technical and project management expertise.
