CharIN Celebrates Milestone Year in 2024: Advancing Electric Mobility Across Latin America

As 2024 draws to a close, CharIN e. V. (Charging Interface Initiative) proudly reflects on a year of significant milestones and impactful contributions, particularly in the dynamic and evolving e-mobility landscape of Latin America. With over 300 members worldwide, CharIN’s mission is to promote standards in the field of charging systems for charging EVs of all types in as many parts of the world, to ensure a seamless, reliable, and user-friendly charging experience for all.

This year marked an expansion of our presence and influence in Latin America, starting with the appointment of key regional representatives. Matías Díaz was appointed as Managing Director for Chile, based in Santiago, to strengthen our operations across South America. In Mexico, Francisco Cabeza Santillana was welcomed as CharIN Ambassador, furthering our engagement in this vital region. These appointments reflect our dedication to regional expertise and the development of strong, localized partnerships.

CharIN also deepened collaborations with strategic partners across Latin America. In Mexico, partnerships with AMIVE and EMA were established to support the development and regulation of the local EV market. In Brazil, CharIN joined forces with PNME, focusing on advancing EV charging infrastructure. These alliances exemplify our approach to blending global knowledge with local insights, driving the adoption of interoperable e-mobility solutions tailored to regional needs.

A Year of Events and Thought Leadership

In 2024, CharIN hosted a diverse range of events, blending virtual and in-person engagements to spark meaningful discussions and collaborations. Two virtual CharIN Tuesdays tailored specifically for the Latin American audience were organized. The first delved into Brazil’s EV market, exploring CCS and MCS systems and enhancing user experiences with insights from distinguished local speakers. The second session, titled "Achieving Interoperability in e-Mobility," focused on standards and protocols pivotal for interoperability in the region. Both sessions remain accessible on CharIN’s website and YouTube channel, extending their reach to a global audience.

CharIN representatives were active at high-profile conferences across the region. Highlights included:

  • At IEEE ICA – ACCA 2024 in Santiago, Matías Díaz explored the challenges of EV infrastructure in Chile, focusing on interoperability, ISO 15118 standards, and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology.
  • During Semana de la Energía 2024 with OLADE in Paraguay, CharIN Ambassador Andrés Barentin contributed to a critical panel discussing the evolving roles of distributed energy generation and the investment required for a successful energy transition.
  • At Power2Drive South America in São Paulo, Tatiana Araujo, CharIN Managing Director for Brazil, addressed global EV charging standardization and smart charging solutions.
  • In Brazil's C-MOVE Minas Gerais, Tatiana Araujo moderated a pivotal discussion involving industry leaders from Raízen Power, CEMIG, Keysight Technologies, and LI-VOLTEK Brazil, focusing on scaling Brazil’s EV charging infrastructure.

Advancing Regulatory Frameworks

CharIN’s advocacy for harmonized regulations was a defining aspect of 2024 and will be also for 2025. By leveraging our global expertise, we supported local stakeholders in Chile, Colombia, and Mexico, helping navigate the regulatory landscape of e-mobility. A significant initiative was the launch of the Regulatory Group for Brazil in June 2024, which provided CharIN members a platform for regular discussions on policy, standardization, taxation, and bi-directional charging. These efforts emphasized collaboration with government stakeholders to ensure that regional regulations align with global best practices. Additionally, CharIN actively participated in the review of Colombian ad-hoc regulations.

Enhancing Access to Knowledge

Recognizing the importance of making our resources accessible to the Latin American community, CharIN launched a dedicated LATAM website. This platform offers Spanish-language resources, including position papers and technical information, providing a centralized hub for updates and insights relevant to the region. Regular updates ensure that the Latin American e-mobility community remains informed and connected to CharIN’s global activities.

Looking Ahead

The progress achieved in 2024 underscores CharIN’s unwavering commitment to supporting the growth of e-mobility in Latin America. By fostering interoperability, advancing regulatory frameworks, and cultivating meaningful partnerships, we have set the stage for continued success in 2025. We look forward to deepening our engagement in the region, empowering stakeholders, and driving the adoption of sustainable mobility solutions across Latin America.

We thank our local partners—both existing and new—for their ongoing commitment to advancing electromobility in the region. We welcome our new partners alongside our established ones: ANAC and AVEC in Chile, AEDIVE in Peru, and ABVE in Brazil, as well as our ambassadors Andrés Barentin and Gastón Fenés.
