Recap of the Testival

The CharIN Testival NA 2025, hosted by the American Center for Mobility in Detroit, Michigan, offered the EV industry the unique opportunity to test the interoperability of their equipment and uncover integration challenges, communication errors, and incompatibilities that can occur when EVs and electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) interact.

Additional features at Testival 2025

Plug & Charge powered by Hubject

CharIN has extended the scope of the Testival with an additional testing option. Together with our Strategic Plug & Charge Testing Partner Hubject, we offered the possibility to perform Plug & Charge end-to-end testing.

What does this mean?

In addition to the Plug & Charge Conformance Testing as part of the standard Testival ticket, you could test the interoperability of Plug & Charge under real conditions. Hubject provided a CPO backend, an eMSP service and a Plug & Charge ecosystem. The CPO Backend and the eMSP Service were connected to the Plug & Charge Ecosystem and participating EVSEs could connect to the CPO Backend via OCPP.

Multi-PKI Testing by Irdeto

At the recent CharIN Testival, for the regular round-robin testing, the provision of an Online V2G PKI for PnC via a CPMS for End2End testing use was used. This testing option featured a CPMS Backend, eMSP service, and Plug & Charge ecosystem, where EVSEs could connect to the CPMS Backend via the OCPP standard. Participants were required to complete the onboarding process for both EVSEs and EVs.

Additionally, an exciting new feature, Multi V2G PKI Testing, allowed for testing multiple V2G PKIs at a dedicated location, which required prior EV onboarding. The testing was conducted at a dedicated test location where separate EVSEs or Test Systems with different V2G PKIs were prepared. Participants were required to complete the onboarding process for EVs, ensuring smooth testing procedures. The testers received the opportunity to sign up during the technical registration.

End to End Plug and Charge Session with Roaming

Partners: CSMS: Lynkwell, Roaming hub + eMSP: ChargeHub, EVSE: Autel

We invited participants to a groundbreaking demo, which showcased the first-ever Plug and Charge session enabled through a roaming hub. This demonstration walked through the full process—from Preparation and Authentication to Authorization and final Reconciliation—proving true interoperability across ecosystems. It highlighted how Plug and Charge could seamlessly extend beyond isolated networks to support roaming scenarios at scale.

Prescribed Testing Program (Managed by ACM, Supported by ChargeX)

An optional prescribed testing program, managed by the event site host American Center for Mobility (ACM), was offered during the CharIN May 2025 Testival. This program was developed with support from the ChargeX Consortium, using prescribed tests that were chosen based on industry feedback through ChargeX Testing Task Force meetings. Below were some core details of the prescribed test program:

  • Running on Day 1 (May 13th) and Day 2 (May 14th) only
  • Gamified, competition style program with points assigned to test attempts & pass criteria
  • Awards available for recognizing testing achievements
  • 40-minutes of test slot dedicated to Prescribed Testing
  • 10-15 Interoperability Test Scenarios to choose from
  • ACM moderators to facilitate prescribed testing period
  • Testing Categories include: Start/Stop methods, HLC protocol selection, fault injection, error reporting, Pause&Resume, Plug&Charge, Adapters, Vehicle-2-Grid, etc.
End-to-end, open-source testing of advanced capabilities by ChargeX

Cranked up the testing!

The open-source EVerest project, winner of numerous prescribed testing awards at the November Testival, was back in a special test booth sponsored by ChargeX. There, participants could test against all the new features contributed by multiple members of the EVerest community in the preceding months, including ISO 15118-20 with TLS 1.3 and ESDP, and perform end-to-end testing with an open-source CSMS.

If time permitted, advanced grid integration and energy management features were also explored, such as departure time and notify limit, with a specific focus on L2 charging.

Visitors stopped by the booth near Test Slot 19 to see how far the project had come!
